This is a visual journey throughout July 2020. Images inform my wider projects and I am always looking for pattern, line, spatial elements in my environment. I have always used my camera to record my everyday journey.

Transitions a body of work

Visual Research June 2020
The following images are from walks and trips to find source material. Some of the visual research are ongoing studies of growth of crops, or the way light falls in a room in my home.
analogue photography patterns and shape in landscape
I have used my isolation walks to make some observational photographs. I initially just used the iPhone to shoot these, but decided to try to make some analogue photographs of some of my walks. I am interested in the tree shapes, their shadows and the patterns I find in these. I have used and contrastContinue reading “analogue photography patterns and shape in landscape”

From the post graduate studio to isolation in three prints
Printmaking has re-emerged in my practice as a major influence on my thinking for the other aspects of my work. It somehow weaves through my work creating a cross over thread that catches all the varied ideas and somehow makes the ideas seem to connect into a common tapestry that I see as my practice.Continue reading “From the post graduate studio to isolation in three prints”

Researching poetry in visual art
I have been researching the currency of poetry in art practice. I have always been interested in the written word and poetry. I appreciate poetry as performance but also how it can be visually portrayed. I had been aware of poetry in art, mainly in the form of Fluxus. Jumping forward I have been lookingContinue reading “Researching poetry in visual art”
Studio research, printmaking to generate visual ideas
Looking back over the first term at the University of Hertfordshire, I found that I have used printmaking as a way of working through my ideas both visually and sculpturally. I found that there were problems in my work that drawing on its own was not resolving. I had an introduction during a workshop withContinue reading “Studio research, printmaking to generate visual ideas”
Methodology Research & Enquiry
Considering my methodology the first questions are; what affects the decisions I make about my practice and what are the broader implications of what I am doing within the practice? In answering, I realised that I adopt different experimental approaches to explore an idea, often emerging from that experience. The word “emerge” has been aContinue reading “Methodology Research & Enquiry”
Researching Folds Revisited
Since researching folds previously I have been looking out for current artists who are using folds in their work. I came across artist Ty Locke whilst researching the Turner Prize shortlist for 2019. He showed up on my searches of Margate artists and had won the Platform Graduate Award in 2018 at the Turner ContemporaryContinue reading “Researching Folds Revisited”

This involves working in small groups, reflectingContinue reading “Visual Research Method Workshop”
Understanding the Ritual and Visual Language in my Practice
I have been reviewing my work following my progress crit. I have come up with some rough ideas about what I think the tentative direction my practice is taking within the context of the postgraduate study course. I have been making conceptual explorations and realise some of the following: There is a fluid and ambiguousContinue reading “Understanding the Ritual and Visual Language in my Practice”
Looking at complexity in Critical Analysis for Research and Enquiry
The excerpt I chose to study for the Critical Analysis in Research and Enquiry was complex. There was initial excitement at finding a piece of writing that expressed so many elements I am pursuing in my own practice. Taking the energy from that excitement, I had to get down to the nitty gritty of understandingContinue reading “Looking at complexity in Critical Analysis for Research and Enquiry”
Researching Folds
During my studio practice I have been developing three dimensional work that uses folds. A recurring theme throughout my practice, I have returned to this during my postgraduate studio work. Tutorial with Kerry Andrews 22nd October 2019
Tutorial Kerry Andrews and I discuss that being lost is an important part of the process. There is a peculiar transition from making into drawing its a translation from one form of thinking into another. There are forms of translation and reference of translation. So, the transformation between states within my drawing mean I amContinue reading “Tutorial with Kerry Andrews 22nd October 2019”

Practice Development Louis Bourgeois – Insomnia Drawings
research on drawing practice I first encountered Bourgeois in 1986 and her work struck a fear in me. It was her way of speaking the unsayable and finding a language for pain, but juxtaposed to that pain and unapologetic at a time when subjects she was addressing were taboo in a wider cultural sense. IContinue reading “Practice Development Louis Bourgeois – Insomnia Drawings”
Defining practice research, methodology and complexity
Following from being set a piece of work to define our practice, there was a seminar with visiting lecturer, Helena McGrath, to establish what our research should be about. We analysed our own practice, what we are interested in and what we do. I found this process a bit alien and difficult at first asContinue reading “Defining practice research, methodology and complexity”
