The installation started in the Postgraduate studio back in February and was going to be a piece of work I added to as the semester went on. However after returning from a field trip to Berlin, the studio’s were closed and I no longer had access to the piece. I spent time in my home studio building a maquette of how I proposed the sculpture would look here.
When I was able to return to the Postgraduate studio in September 2020 I set about making the work and adding to it how I had imagined it. I made three iterations of this installation. One the drawing with tape, the second veiling the drawing with net and thirdly I drew into the net with aluminium wire and chord.
Iteration One
The film below shows work on the installation drawing altering some of the drawing.
The film below shows the initial drawing of the contents of the cells.
I continued the work in another session at the studios.
Iteration Two
After completing the drawn tape aspect of the work, I started to install the net. I had bought the net into the studio previously and had been locked out of the studio before having the opportunity to work with it. I liked the qualities of the net, it was heavy and felt bodily. I also have an ongoing background fascination with curtaining and hiding behind curtains. This has emerged in many of my drawing studies. I put small tacks into the installation at points along the top of the drawling and down the right hand edge. I then draped the net keeping it taught along the right hand edge and working it into a curtain drape at the left hand edge.
Iteration Three and Performance Film
The third iteration of the piece came after sitting with the installation for some time. I then started to work into it with aluminium drawings in three dimensions and adding them into the net.
I then added some string drawn elements and additions of some porcelain leaf moulds I had made, I just wanted to place these different elements into the piece. The Film below shows the aluminium drawn three dimensional pieces in the net.
Performance
I did some performance pieces using myself to enter and interact with the piece. I ended up filming the piece as if I were bringing the viewer into the piece so that they were the performer. I filmed entering the piece and I entitled this EnVeiling Lines and Circles 2020 Part Three.
Next steps would be to make more items to be caught in the net. I am in the process of learning how to cast my found objects and am thinking of a mixture of resin cast and slip mould casting for these.
I am going to get longer lengths of aluminium to work into larger three dimensional drawings. There are many variations I would like to explore with this including a way of making the drawings easier to make, as they are very time consuming. I have discussed making them with oil stick instead of tape and thinking about ways of covering the walls, possibly even having wall paper printed or vinyl decals.
