Following a tutorial with visiting lecturer artist Michael Petry, I had a decision to make about how to accommodate my proposed work. I had not been given access to the university studios as expected over the semester C. This had lots of drawbacks for continual study on the two year part time masters degree.
Michael had suggested that I turn part of my studio into an installation space. As the studio had been recently completely reorganised I was quite stumped but determined to have a space just to make the work that I had proposed. I started to convert the family outside eating area to a studio.
With the reality of the university studio’s not being available for some considerable this seemed the best option. This enabled me to work really large-scale for my drawings and also work on sculpture which my rented studio could not accommodate. I had decided that the rented studio was too much financially with three students in the house so had to let that go. I have spent time transitioning from studios which is quite a strange time. Being able to draw really large has compensated me greatly, as the rented studio was a good thinking space.
Here are a few shots of getting it built
I started to work in the space and made some large scale drawings that I had started in the studio at A1 scale and have continued to work on throughout the summer.
I spoke to both Michael Petry and Joanna Hyslop about the work shown below and how I would develop this. I decided to start at the beginning with work that was on the drawing board and use the space as both installation and drawing space. The work I made first Lines and Cells 2020 Part One can be seen here.
This is what I propose to make given time. As I await studio space allocation in the University, I cannot predict how much space I will get, especially with new restrictions in place so I am planning for a space, albeit a cold one in winter, to enable me to go large on installations, even if they are in a space that may never be seen. This will be a space that kind of becomes a shop front for my wider project.
This following set of images are proposals for a similar space which I made for my Practice One submission in May 2020. I based the space above on these “fantasy” spaces, which are rare and difficult to find. The downside is that it is an outside space and that the lighting is going to be challenging. Over the next few weeks I hope to make the space more watertight and put in lights.
